Finally after seeing that JRebel won the JAX most innovative Java technology award, I am giving it a try. Sick of all the tomcat restarts.
JRebel is one of the best utility I've ever seen. We have just met JRebel and loved it.
Just started using JRebel; installation was done in 15 minutes and 1 hour later it saved me 20 minutes of restart time.
It not only takes me at least 2 minutes to redeploy, but it adds another 5 minutes to get back in the zone and I still have to bring the application back to the state where I was developing. This alone is at least 10 minutes lost for a minor change. JRebel deserves every single cent of its selling price.
I just hated the whole Eclipse IDE and one of my co-workers suggested I try Jrebel since 40% of my time was waiting on Eclipse to build and run. With Jrebel, things are going much smoothly now.
JRebel is an awesome product. I probably save 3 hours out of a 6.5 hour workday using JRebel - I use Eclipse with JBoss and it saves me a tremendous amount of time by not having to restart JBoss every time I make a change.
I see JRebel as this "missing piece" in the whole picture where we could see Java-stack not only as a stable, well-tested environment to build applications on but also as a rapid development environment.
Why isn't JRebel part of the standard Java SDK?
Over the last 265 days JRebel prevented at least 1,209 redeploys/restarts saving me about 49 hours.
We found some very interesting side-effects right away. The worst of those was some badly coded Hibernate which would generate over 700 database queries. The JSF memory footprint was a bad surprise - some beans are in the session, that shouldn’t have been there.
JRebel is really an amazing tool.
We found it very useful to dig into the SQL queries. We quickly found some very lengthy and complicated queries. We also found that our session can get as large as 30 Mb - we had too many references to Spring beans in the session.
